Microsoft Is Adding a Dark Theme to Windows 10's File Explorer. First discovered by Windows expert Rafael Rivera in the release of build 17650, this feature can be enabled using the mach2 application. Mach2 is a program created by Rivera that can be used to search for hidden features and enable them. This allows you to play with features that are currently in development or used for testing purposes.
Dark themes are becoming more popular than ever Where almost every popular app include Twitter, Outlook, and others allow to turn on dark themes for the apps and online version. And now Microsoft introduced a dark theme for file explorer that you can set up on Windows 10 versions 1809. Previously when users enable the Dark mode in Windows 10, its effect was limited to preinstalled apps like Windows Store, Calendar, Mail, and other Universal Windows Platform applications. That means dark mode will have no effect on the File Explorer.
And with Redstone 5 Build 17666 (upcoming Windows 10 version 1809), Microsoft introduces a new dark theme for the classic version of File Explorer, which anyone can enable using the “Colors” page from the “Personalization” settings page. The new dark theme coats with different shade of black the background, pane, ribbon and file menus, context menus, and popup dialogs.
How to enable dark mode in windows 10 file explorer
To enable the Dark theme for File Explorer Windows 10
- Press Windows + I that Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Now Click on Colors.
- Under “More options,” select the Dark option.
Once you’ve completed the steps, Windows will automatically enable it and the Dark Theme will be enabled in all support applications and interfaces, including in File Explorer. open File Explorer, and you should now see the dark theme as image below.
Also you can change the Accent Colors here to make it look more unique. In the Color section, you will have a variety of different colors you can choose. If you just want Windows to pick it for you, just leave the “Automatically pick an accent color for my background” box checked. If you’re not satisfied with the default color options, you can go in and use a custom color that gives you a lot more options.
If you found windows 10 file explorer dark theme not working, Then make sure you are running the compatible windows version as currently this option available only on Redstone 5 preview builds (build 17766 and later) and its set to public release on upcoming Windows 10 feature update expected on October 2018 as Windows 10 version 1809.
With today's release of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17666, Microsoft added an updated Dark Theme for File Explorer that is for the most part usable. We first reported on the File Explorer Dark Theme back in April, but at that time it was an ugly mess as you can see below.
With the release of today's build, though, the Dark Theme looks much nicer in File Explorer and just has a few areas where the shading is off. For the most part, if you have been frustrated with File Explorer's lack of a Dark Theme, then this is much bigger step in the right direction.
Enabling the Dark Theme in File Explorer and Windows 10
If you want to start using the new Dark Theme in File Explorer, make sure you are using the latest Windows Insider build, and then go into Settings, then Personalization, and finally Colors. Under the Colors settings screen will be an option labeled 'Choose your default app mode' with 'Light' and 'Dark' options.
To enable the Dark Theme in Windows 10, select the 'Dark' option in the screen shown below.
Once you enable the 'Dark' option, Windows will automatically enable it and the Dark Theme will be enabled in all support applications and interfaces, including in File Explorer.
